It is finally here, election day. As American citizens, we have the privilege of participating in the democratic process, and it is a great privilege, one many fought and died for. Yet, it would seem this election season feels a bit different. Just yesterday, stories of stores boarded up across cities in preparation for the election backlash. In short, no matter the outcome, because of the powderkeg we find ourselves sitting on as Americans, conflict for some, is inevitable. Where does the Christian find themselves in this dense cultural haze? Tomorrow when all the smoke clears, and the election is done, will the mercy of God still be new? Lamentations 3:22-23 says, “Because of the LORD’s faithful love we do not perish, for His mercies never end. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness!” What a fantastic promise! His mercies never end. The one true and living God has control over the calamities, trials, and blessings. He works all things together for the Good and His ultimate glory. In short, God is still in complete control on November 3rd, 4th, and beyond. Pick a day and time; you will always find the Sovereign God of the Universe in control.
What is this mercy? God is faithfully keeping his promises with his chosen people despite their unworthiness and unfaithfulness. He forgives, spares, and acts on behalf of those he loves, despite the plight they find themselves in. See, it’s not just once or twice, but it is daily. Luke 1:50 tells us, “His mercy is from generation to generation on those who fear him.” If your theology has you believing that God’s mercy has run out, that somehow, He has forgotten about you, put you on the proverbial shelf, think again. He is faithful, good, and merciful.
Psalm 30:5 says it this way, “Weeping may stay overnight, but there is joy in the morning.” Paul Tripp writes, “God’s steadfast, faithful, and never-failing love has been placed on you even though you could never have done anything to earn or deserve it. God will never give up on you.”
So, the mercy of God is eternal and meets you right where you are, giving you a fresh portion as you need it. Yet, what about tomorrow? His mercy will remain no matter who resides in the White House. We can drink from the fountain of grace and mercy because of the finished work of Christ. Our nation may change, your candidate may loose, but that has zero bearings on the mercy and goodness of God. It was His fresh daily mercy for the Christian, how we got through 2020, the pandemic, natural disasters, and a tumultuous election. Great is His faithfulness!
As the election results roll in, ask yourself: Have I rested in the fact that I serve a faithful God? That the same God who saved you is faithful to keep you no matter which direction the nation finds itself? If the Lord allows you to find a new morning on November 4th, you can expect to see his mercy greeting you as well.
