Today, former Mayor of New Orleans C. Ray Nagin was found guilty of federal corruption charges ranging from bribery, theft and conspiracy. Sadly, this is common place in our nation. We the people, target men with loads of gifting and charisma and catapult them as the next rising star. However, many times fail to ask the question; how is this person’s character and integrity? As a result, we see men rise to the top, yet implode on themselves over time from a lack of character.
This left me with the thought, that while your gift makes room for you, it is your character that sustains you. In his book, The Remnant, Pastor Larry Stockstill writes, “Our lives are our ministries, and as such, they must reflect only the highest standards of integrity.” Many men, especially in ministry desire a platform, when the Lord has already given one, their life. Instead of looking for the next following, let us cultivate our wives and children, steward our resources faithfully, love our God wholeheartedly and live for His glory. You may be crying out to be used by the Lord and yet feel like you are on the shelf for His use. It could be, that He is cultivating your character for your benefit and His greater glory. So, instead of trying to rise to the top only to implode later, ask the Lord to work on your character.
The story of Ray Nagin will soon fade from the headlines, but the consequences of a lack of character and integrity will resonate within his family for years to come. Let us, as the people of God, fall on our faces before a Holy God and cry, ‘Lord give us pure hearts and clean hands.’
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you.” 1 Peter 5:6
